What does self-care look like to you? Maybe it’s catching up with friends, cozying up with a book or making time for your favorite hobby. Any activity that helps you take a break from life’s stresses and refill your cup is good for your mental and emotional well-being. To also show love to your physical well-being, add fitness to your routine — and what better way to ensure your own self-care than by joining others on their journey, like taking a fitness class at FHF?

Why Fitness for Self-Care?

Exercise is an essential form of self-care, because it’s beneficial to all areas of our health. You probably already know some of the long-term physical benefits: lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol, and less risk of serious health conditions, like heart attack, stroke and certain cancers.

Immediately after a workout, you might notice your mood is lifted and you have more energy. There’s a scientific reason for that: Exercise reduces levels of adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormones), while boosting production of endorphins (feel-good chemicals). You’re changing your brain as you’re changing your body! 

It’s a snowball effect from there. The more often you exercise, the better you feel. As you see the results of all your hard work, you earn a sense of pride and grow your self-confidence, which you can bring to other important areas of your life.

 

Fitness Should Be Fun!

Think of exercise as playtime as you create or adjust your self-care routine. It’s your opportunity to try something different. Meet new people and find community with group classes. Because if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, it’s not really self-care (and that defeats the purpose).

Self-care should be personal, based on your specific interests and needs. Know these may change over time, and that’s OK. Like everything else in life, it’s about progress — small steps every day. Show yourself love and care with fitness whenever and however you can, even if it’s a short walk. Make sure you’re also getting the nutrition and sleep your body needs as you move more.
